FHS Archival Collections with Canadian Content
The Society's Alvin J. Huss Archives houses a number of collections that contain information pertaining to the forest, conservation, and environmental history of Canada. A few examples are described below.
Ainsworth, John H. (b.1909)
Inclusive Dates: 1955-1961
Size: 1.6 cubic feet.
Description: Papers include journal and newspaper articles, correspondence, magazines and pamphlets, bound and unbound reports, reel-to-reel magnetic tapes, film strip series with accompanying record albums, and a copy of Ainsworth's book Paper . . . the Fifth Wonder (Kaukauna, Wis.: Thomas Publishing Co., 1958). Papers reflect various papermaking processes. Ainsworth worked for a number of paper mills in both the United States and Canada throughout his career.
Lacey, James D., Company
Inclusive Dates: 1898-1958
Size: 27.2 cubic feet.
Description: Records of firm engaged in timberland acquisition and management in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and to a lesser extent in the Philippines and other parts of the world. Included are correspondence between the Lacey Company and many lumber and forest products corporations and private timberland purchasers; personal and household papers of J. W. McCurdy, which contain business correspondence of the Lacey Company after 1935 (14 boxes). Also ledgers, journals, and other financial records of the company (1898-1958, 6 cartons).
Forest History Society Manuscript Collection
Inclusive Dates: ca. 1880-ca. 1970
Size: 38 cubic feet.
Description: Correspondence, drafts of articles, speeches, reports, handbooks, clippings, memoirs, surveyors' notebooks, miscellaneous booklets and other printed items, relating to the lumber industry and to forestry and conservation in the United States, Canada, and the world. Includes some editorial material relating to the Journal of Forest History, but is largely small lots of material collected from various sources. Catalog cards for each manuscript are filed in the Forest History Society's main library catalog.
The FHS Environmental History Archival Collections Database contains descriptions of nearly 900 collections that contain Canadian material in repositories all over the world and almost 800 collections that are found in 62 different Canadian repositories.
