Historical Note
The Weyerhaeuser Company is an international forest products company producing softwood lumber, pulp, paper and packaging products. The company was founded in 1900 by Frederick Weyerhaeuser as the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company. Much of the land for its founding was purchased from James J. Hill. In 1929, the company built what was then the world's largest sawmill in Longview, Washington. Weyerhaeuser's pulp mill in Longview, which began production in 1931, sustained the company financially during the Great Depression. In 1959, the company eliminated the word "Timber" from its name to better reflect its diversified operations. In 1963, Weyerhaeuser began its first international operations. Weyerhaeuser began its High Yield Forestry Plan in 1967, which implemented the practice of planting seedlings within one year of a harvest, soil fertilization, thinning, and rehabilitation. In the 1990s, Weyerhaeuser expanded operations into South America, Australia, and many other foreign locations. In 1999, Weyerhaeuser purchased MacMillan Bloedel Limited, a large Canadian forestry company. In 2010, the company elected REIT status (real estate investment trust) under which it manages its forestland and its taxable REIT subsidiary, composed of Wood Products, Cellulose Fibers and Real Estate.
Collection Overview
The Collection is arranged into ten series. Series I holds incoming and outgoing correspondence from the original Tacoma Office from 1900 to 1950. The Directors and Executives Series (Series II) holds the papers of several prominent individuals in the Weyerhaeuser upper level management who held office between 1900 and 1998. These include: Norton A. Clapp, Charles H. Ingram, George S. Long, George S. Long Jr., W. L. McCormick, W.H. Meadowcroft, F.R. Titcomb, F.K. Weyerhaeuser, George H. Weyerhaeuser, and J.P. Weyerhaeuser Jr. This series also holds transcripts of speeches given by many upper level Weyerhaeuser employees.
Series III holds records for individual branches and regions as well as subsidiaries and companies acquired by Weyerhaeuser. The Advertising Series (Series IV) holds an array of Weyerhaeuser advertisements from 1920 to approximately 2006. In the early years of these advertisements, the focus primarily centered upon Weyerhaeuser forest products distributed by Weyerhaeuser Sales Company, such as white pine lumber, red cedar poles, hemlock flooring, fabricated wood parts, cedar shingles, balsam wool sealed insulation, 4-Square lumber, and working plans for homes.
Series V holds transcripts and audio recordings of Weyerhaeuser-commissioned oral histories. These included Weyerhaeuser and Southeast Asia oral history projects (which were internal) as well as collaborations with Columbia University and the Forest History Society. Series VI, The Weyerhaeuser Publications files, hold the working files for two major works commissioned by Weyerhaeuser: The Weyerhaeuser Southeast Asia History Chronology (1980) and Timber and Men (1963). There are also brochures, histories, and internal newspapers and magazines.
The Outside Publications Series (Series VII) contains books, brochures, booklets, periodicals, articles, and news clippings collected by Weyerhaeuser employees from the late 1800s through 2005. Subjects include forestry and lumber guides, area histories, and various business treatises. Series VIII holds scrapbooks and other items documenting domestic and international operations, site visits by executives and the board of directors, employee activities, and personal events, such as the kidnapping of George Weyerhaeuser and the death of George S. Long.
The Weyerhaeuser Photographs Series (Series IX) documents operations, subject files (such as logging and forest management), historical images; and biographical files of directors, executives, and various other employees.
Series X holds audio/visual material in a variety of formats including microfilm, reels, beta, VHS, compact discs, DVD, cassette tapes, and phonograph records. The majority of the material consists of advertising and broadcasts recorded from local television news sources documenting Weyerhaeuser headlines. Other content includes corporate events such as meetings and ceremonies; training videos for Weyerhaeuser employees; and films produced by Weyerhaeuser.

2. Tacoma Office Letter Books, 1900-1936.
The Tacoma Office Letter Books hold copies of all outgoing correspondence from the office under the auspices of the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, the Weyerhaeuser Logging Company, and the Weyerhaeuser Logged-Off Land Company. George Long is the primary signatory of all letters from 1900 to 1914. As the company grows, more individuals become prominent such as Minot Davis, Hugh Stewart, George W. Marshall, W.J. Ryan, and C.S. Chapman. All letter books are arranged chronologically. Each has an alphabetical index to assist researchers with finding individual letters. General Volumes 1 through 136 cover all aspects of the Tacoma office operations (boxes 220-253). There is one volume of Weyerhaeuser Land Company outgoing correspondence (box 254), and 35 volumes of A.F. Firmin outgoing correspondence regarding land management. Firmin's dealings eventually would become the Weyerhaeuser Logged-Off Land Company (boxes 254-263).
Users should note that the original volume numbers have been retained, so requests should be made by box number and date range, as there are often multiple volumes with the same number.

1. Norton A. Clapp Papers, 1959-1977.
Norton Clapp (1906-1995) began his career with Weyerhaeuser in 1938. He joined the Navy during World War II and served until 1946 when he returned to Weyerhaeuser. In 1947 he succeeded his father as a director of the company. He was president from 1963 to 1966 and guided the company through international expansion in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. He oversaw additions in the commercial doors, hardwoods and fine paper industries. He served as Chairman of the Board from 1966 to 1970.
The Norton A. Clapp Papers consist primarily of correspondence along with limited material maintained by Clapp during his time with Weyerhaeuser. These items include appointment calendars, genealogies, board meeting material, and speeches. The files are organized alphabetically by individual correspondent, company, or topic.

2. Charles H. Ingram Papers, 1902-1975.
A son of one of the company's founders, Charles H. Ingram (1892-1979) started with Weyerhaeuser in the shipping department at Everett in 1919. He followed F.R. Titcomb as general manager of the Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company from 1925-1929 before being transferred to the Tacoma office. Ingram was assistant manager at the Tacoma office in 1933 when Phil Weyerhaeuser took over as the company's CEO after the death of George S. Long. Ingram was soon promoted to manager in 1936, succeeding F.R. Titcomb. As Phil Weyerhaeuser's right hand man, Ingram directed the logging and manufacturing activities of the company and took an active part in developing new marketing programs. His term as general manager spanned the presidencies of F.E. Weyerhaeuser, H.H. Irvine, J.P. Weyerhaeuser Jr., and F.K. Weyerhaeuser. He was General Manager, 1936-1956; Executive Vice President, 1956-1958; Vice President, 1947-1956; Director, 1947-1963.
The Charles H. Ingram files primarily hold business correspondence. Other files include administrative documents, articles, papers, reports, publications, clippings, and photographs.

11. J. P. Weyerhaeuser Jr. Papers, 1931-1958.
After serving in the military and attending college, John Philip "Phil" Weyerhaeuser, Jr. (1899 -1956) was appointed general manager in 1925 of Clearwater Timber Company in Lewiston, Idaho. In 1931, Clearwater merged with Potlatch Lumber Company to form Potlatch Forests, Inc., with Weyerhaeuser as president. In 1933 he moved to Tacoma to become executive vice president of the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company. He oversaw the transition from a dealer in timberlands to a manufacturer of forest products and a manager of renewable tree farms. Central to this change was his vision that the only way for a forest products company to operate was to own and manage renewable timberlands. He remained with the family firm, becoming president in 1947 and serving in that capacity until his death in 1956.
The J.P. Weyerhaeuser Jr. Papers consist primarily of correspondence. Other files include administrative documents, articles, papers, reports, statements, research files, publications, clippings, and pamphlets.

The Longview Branch records document Weyerhaeuser's response to the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. On May 18, 1980 at 8:32 a.m., a magnitude 5.1 earthquake triggered one of the world's largest recorded landslides, followed by one of the most powerful volcanic blasts in the history of North America. Nearly 63,000 acres of Weyerhaeuser Timber under the jurisdiction of the Longview Branch was destroyed. Weyerhaeuser immediately commenced salvage and recovery operations. Much of the downed timber could be used, but was at great risk of insect damage and disease. After a government study to assess the hazards of working in ash finished, they proceeded with full-scale salvage. The operation ultimately saved 850 million board feet of timber. This process was followed by the planting of seedlings, and the analysis of watersheds to assess the combined effects of land use on fish habitat and water quality.
The Longview Branch records hold employee information, aerial photographs, research and reports, timber salvage documentation, eruption logs, public relations material, and files regarding the creation of Mt. St. Helens National Monument.

Series IV. Advertising, 1920-2006.
(24 boxes.)
The Advertising series holds an array of Weyerhaeuser advertisements which date from 1920 to approximately 2006. In the early years of these advertisements, the focus primarily centered upon Weyerhaeuser Forest Products distributed by the Weyerhaeuser Sales Company, such as white pine lumber, red cedar poles, hemlock flooring, fabricated wood parts, cedar shingles, balsam wool sealed insulation, 4-Square lumber, and working plans for homes. Ads appeared in such magazines as American Lumberman, Better Homes and Gardens, American Builder, and American Forests. As the company expanded and diversified in the 1950s and 1960s onward, advertisements likewise expanded to include topics such as international operations, importing and exporting, high yield forestry, environmental impact, and others.
The materials in this series consist almost entirely of final products of advertisements. The ads are organized in two chronological runs: national campaigns and individual campaigns, although there is some overlap between the two. This series also holds commissioned artwork. Boxes 603 through 608 hold originals and reproductions of wildlife paintings and other artwork commissioned by Weyerhaeuser for an advertisement series beginning in 1952.
Note: Researchers interested in the development of these ads and corresponding information may wish to reference the Directors and Executives series for the Public Information and/or Advertising files therein.

The ads appeared at regular intervals in national magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, U.S. News, Farm Journal and others. Weyerhaeuser also hired artists Bruce Bomberger, Jack Dumas and others for similar wildlife and forestry advertisements. Scrapbook.

Series V: Oral Histories, 1952-1999.
(39 boxes.)
The Weyerhaeuser Company created and collected a rich variety of oral histories. These included Weyerhaeuser and Southeast Asia oral history projects (which were internal) as well as collaborations with Columbia University and the Forest History Society.
The Weyerhaeuser Oral Histories were conducted by numerous individuals between 1952 and 2003. Weyerhaeuser employees including secretaries, bookkeepers, stenographers, loggers, foremen, salesmen, and executives were interviewed to discuss their experiences as Weyerhaeuser employees. Sometimes employee spouses were part of the interviews. In addition to the transcripts, some folders contain biographical information, reference material used for interviews, questions asked during the interview, and correspondence. A series of interviews entitled "Traditions Through the Trees" holds interviews with Weyerhaeuser employees for Joni Sensel's book of the same title.
The Columbia Oral Histories were commissioned by Weyerhaeuser in the early 1950s. Professor Allan Nevins of the History Department of Columbia University headed up the project, assisted by Ralph Hidy. They interviewed employees and executives, then current and past, between 1953 and 1956. Allan Nevins and Ralph Hidy went on to work on Timber and Men: The Weyerhaeuser Story.
The Forest History Society Oral Histories focused on creating a personal history of Phil Weyerhaeuser. Elwood Maunder and Frederick Billings conducted these interviews, which took place between 1967 and 1978.
The Southeast Asia Oral Histories were conducted by Alden Jones between 1977 and 1979. The focus of the interviews was to learn about employee work experiences for the Far East Operations of Weyerhaeuser.
Names with an asterisk have an audio component on either cassette or reel. Cassettes are organized alphabetically in boxes 642 through 644. If an interview is recorded on a reel, the asterisk is followed by the box number in which the reel is stored. Several interviews exist in audio form only; these items are listed at the box level.

(94 boxes.)
The Weyerhaeuser Publications files holds the working files for two major works commissioned by Weyerhaeuser: The Weyerhaeuser Southeast Asia History Chronology (1980) and Timber and Men (1963). There are also brochures, histories, and internal newspapers and magazines.
1. Weyerhaeuser Southeast Asia History Chronology working files, 1977-1980.
This internal work documents the history of Weyerhaeuser's presence in the Southeast Asia Region from 1920 to 1977. The files hold the final draft of the book, as well as interview lists, correspondence, and chapter-by-chapter drafts with notes. The work was spearheaded by Alden H. Jones of the Tacoma office in the late 1970s. It was a collaborative process between Jones and individuals working in the Southeast Asia offices abroad. 2. Timber and Men working papers, 1953-1969
In 1953, an agreement was reached between Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and Columbia University for a book documenting the history of the Weyerhaeuser Company and its affiliates. Timber and Men: The Weyerhaeuser Story was published in 1963. The book traces the history of the Weyerhaeuser Company from its early beginnings to the early 1960s.
The original choice for the author of the book was Allan Nevins, however due to the scope of the project Ralph W. Hidy and Frank Ernest Hill also worked on the book. In addition to the three main authors, there were also four research consultants: Vincent P. Carosso, Frederick K. Kohlmeyer, Norman F. Thomas, and Mira Wilkins. The authors communicated with both Weyerhaeuser presidents and company leaders in their writing of the book, sending many early drafts of chapters to Tacoma and receiving marked up copies in return.
The Timber and Men working papers hold photocopied research material dated from 1897 to the early 1960s, as well as correspondence from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. There are also early drafts of the chapters, as well as documents that were instrumental in the actual writing of the book including research material and correspondence. These papers also contain histories, articles, papers, industry data, legal and finance files, organization files, subject information, and a limited number of reproduction photographs. There are 19 alphabetical index file boxes with notes on a variety of subjects included in the book.
