The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is one of 40 national recreation areas in the United States. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area was established in 1966, and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Mt. Rogers itself and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area were named after William Barton Rogers (1804-1882), who was the first Virginian state geologist and the founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is under the jurisdiction of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The area is home to four congressionally designated wilderness areas: Lewis Fork Wilderness, Little Wilson Creek Wilderness, Raccoon Branch Wilderness, and Little Dry Run Wilderness areas. There is a grand total of 400 miles of trail, eleven campgrounds, and scenic roads like the Mount Rogers Scenic Byway and the road to Whitetop Mountain. The Mount Rogers area also overlaps with 60 miles of Appalachian Trail and 18 miles of Virginia Creeper Trail. The area hosts many outdoor recreation activities including hunting, fishing, bird watching, sight-seeing, swimming, skiing, and more.
