Abstract: Charles W. Philpot was a research forester and staff specialist with the United States Forest Service. The collection includes Philpot’s personnel records as well as a copy of a study titled “Land Ownership Patterns and Their Impacts on Appalachian Communities – A Survey of 80 Counties.”

Biographical Note

Charles W. Philpot was born February 14, 1939. He received a bachelor of science degree in forestry from the University of California, Berkley in 1960. He then worked as a research technician while pursuing a master of forest science, which he received in 1963 also from the University of California at Berkley. After moving to Montana, Philpot resumed a graduate program that he had begun in California, and in 1970 received a Ph.D. in plant chemistry from the University of Montana.

Philpot began his Forest Service career at the Pacific Northwest Station as a member of a forest survey crew in eastern Washington during the summer of 1960. He then went on to work in California and Montana, as well as Washington, DC. Much of Philpot’s research work concerned the science of fire behavior, fire characteristics, fire chemistry and ecology. In 1973 he became Staff Specialist in the Division of Forest Fire and Atmospheric Sciences Research in Washington, DC. Philpot’s career promotions and transfers continued: assistant director, Pacific Southwest Station, 1975-1983; director Forest Fire and Atmospheric Sciences, 1983-1986; Associate Deputy Chief of Research, 1986-1988, and finally, director, Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, 1988-1995.
