Descriptive Summary

Abstract: Charles Stowell Smith (1882-1944) worked in various fields related to forestry and the lumber industry, including the U.S. Forest Service in both California and Washington, D.C., the California White and Sugar Pine Manufacturers Association, the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, and the National Recovery Administration.

This photograph album contains 260 black-and-white photographs of lumber mills, towns, yards, and forests of various lumber companies. Some photographs are captioned with company names and location, while others are not. In addition, there are photographs of the California White and Sugar Pine Manufactures Association booth at “Own Your Own Home Expositions” in New York and Chicago, 1921. It is unknown if Smith took these photographs, but the dates suggest they are from the time period when he served as secretary of the California White and Sugar Pine Manufacturers Association from 1916-1929.

Biographical Note

Charles Stowell Smith (1882-1944) worked in various field related to forestry and the lumber industry, including the U.S. Forest Service in both California and Washington, D.C., the California White and Sugar Pine Manufacturers Association, the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, and the National Recovery Administration.

Smith graduated from the University of Michigan in 1905 with a degree in forestry. He began working for the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, first in the San Francisco office where he became chief of the Office of Forest Products in 1910. During this time, he conducted experiments in the seasoning and preservative treatment of wood to protect marine structures and supervised the Timber Testing Laboratory at the University of California. In 1916 he left the Forest Service to become secretary of the California White and Sugar Pine Manufacturers Association. He became a forest economist with the National Lumber Manufacturers Association in 1929 and their executive vice president in 1932. From 1934 to 1935 he worked for the National Recovery Administration. He returned to the U.S. Forest Service in 1937 working in the Washington Office division of State and Private Forestry. He transferred to the Office of Forest Products and Supplies in 1942 and served as an adviser to the War Production Board along with other war agencies and industrial organization until his death in 1944.
