Historical Note

During a meeting held November 20, 1920, forestry officials from 13 states discussed the urgent need for a nationwide association that could represent the interests of the states in forestry matters. Gifford Pinchot, commissioner of the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry, recognizing the need, invited all State Foresters and several representatives of the US Forest Service to meet with him in the State Senate Chamber at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on December 8 and 9, 1920. During this meeting, that State Foresters Association was formally organized. Following the organizational meeting of the then named Association of State Foresters, meetings were held annually.

Prior to the formation of the National Association, an Association of Eastern Foresters had existed which was merged into the organization of wider scope. Early meetings consisted mainly of field trips designed to show the facilities, progress, practices and policies of the host state. In 1964 at the annual meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, the official name of the Association was changed to The National Association of State Foresters, or NASF. It has been the policy of the association to hold its annual meeting in various sections of the country so that the members may better understand each other’s problems, and work with broad knowledge in promoting their mutual interests.

The NASF is a non-profit organization that represents the directors of the 50 state forestry agencies, eight United States territories, and the District of Columbia. State foresters manage and protect state and private forests across the United States, which together encompass two-thirds of the nation’s forests. Through public-private partnerships, NASF seeks to discuss, develop, sponsor and promote programs and activities which will advance the practice of sustainable forestry, the conservation and protection of forest lands and associated resources and the establishment and protection of forests in the urban environment. The Cooperative Forest Fire Program, commonly known as the Smokey Bear Program, was created to maintain public awareness of the need to prevent human caused wildfires. It is managed by the United States Forest Service in cooperation with the Ad Council and NASF.
