Descriptive Summary
Abstract: Laurence R. Young ("Bugs") was a student at the Biltmore Forest School from about 1911 to 1913 and later forester for Essex County, New Jersey.
The collection includes about 135 loose black-and-white photographs and 20 pieces of memorabilia primarily documenting Laurence R. Young's time as a student at the Biltmore Forest School from about 1911-1913. Photographs depict Biltmore students and activities at or en route to the school's six "working fields": in Darmstadt, Germany; Landes, France; the Adirondack region of New York state; North Carolina (New Bern and Asheville areas, particularly the village of Sunburst); Cadillac, Michigan; and Marshfield, Oregon. Memorabilia includes a Biltmore Forest School examination; a copy of the program from the 1950 Biltmore Forest School reunion, entitled Flowers for the Living; news clippings from Young's career as a forester for Essex County, New Jersey; copies of his obituary; and a letter from Biltmore Forest School head Carl Schenck in 1953 to Young's wife following Young's death.

Biltmore Forest School Examination - Folder 1
Biltmore Forest School Reunion: Flowers for the Living, 1950- From 28 May 1950 to 31 May 1950, a reunion of the alumni of the Biltmore Forest School was held at the George Vanderbilt Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. Former students, lecturers, and prominent American foresters attended the four-day celebration. A commemorative booklet titled Flowers for the Living was published apparently that same year by the committee responsible for organizing the event. The thirty-one-page publication documents the activities and events held at the reunion and includes such items as a written review of the reunion, copies of speeches and presentations made there, old photographs taken when the alumni were students, new photographs snapped during reunion events, an alumni roster, and a listing of deceased graduates and lecturers.
- The Flowers for the Living booklet was initially described as the Biltmore Forest School Alumni Reunion Collection, produced as part of the second round of a cooperative project between the Forest History Society, the Biltmore Estate Archives, and the NCSU Special Collections Libraries, 2002-2003. The description has been re-incorporated into the Laurence R. Young Papers, per provenance principles.
- To produce a digital facsimile of Flowers for the Living, the text of the publication was transcribed and keyed into electronic format as a Microsoft Word 2000 document. Photographs and illustrations appearing in the booklet were scanned and incorporated into the electronic document, and a final Adobe Acrobat .pdf file was produced.
