Descriptive Summary

Abstract: On June 12, 1941, the first official tree farm was dedicated near Elma, Washington. The Clemons Tree Farm, owned by the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and named for local logger Charles H. Clemons, became the first in a succession of privately owned forest lands certified for growing trees as a crop and practicing forest management in lieu of federal regulations. During the 1940s timberland certified for tree farming was primarily owned by large industrial firms in the West, but as the movement gained momentum and spread to the South, the participation of small landowners became a focus for outreach and growth, and provided the foundation for a nationwide organization. Currently, the American Tree Farm System estimates that more than 88,000 private landowners managing approximately 26 million acres of forest land are in the program.

The collection includes historical material such as essays from the 1940s and 1950s attempting to define the burgeoning tree farm movement, inspection and certification records of some of the first tree farms, and early press clippings. Historical Note

On June 12, 1941, the first official tree farm was dedicated near Elma, Washington. The Clemons Tree Farm, owned by the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and named for local logger Charles H. Clemons, became the first in a succession of privately owned forest lands certified for growing trees as a crop and practicing forest management in lieu of federal regulations. During the 1940s timberland certified for tree farming was primarily owned by large industrial firms in the West, but as the movement gained momentum and spread to the South, the participation of small landowners became a focus for outreach and growth, and provided the foundation for a nationwide organization. Currently, the American Tree Farm System estimates that more than 88,000 private landowners managing approximately 26 million acres of forest land are in the program.

The tree farm program, initially advocated for by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association (NMLA), was adopted by one of their trade promotion subsidiaries, the American Forest Product Industries (AFPI), in 1946. The program became national in scale during the 1950s, and focused on fire prevention outreach and support for self-regulation of privately owned forestland.

AFPI later became the American Forest Institute (AFI). In the 1970s, with Richard Lewis as national director, AFI focused on improving the tree farm program's standards and record keeping practices. In 1976 the Tree Farm logo and name became registered trademarks and the National Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year award was introduced. In the 1980s Lester DeCoster assumed the role of national director of AFI.

In 1983, Tree Farmer magazine began publication, a periodical that is still in circulation in 2011. In 1986 AFI was restructured and the American Forest Council (AFC) was created as an education and outreach organization to supplement the lobbying activities of the National Forest Products Association (NFPA). The Tree Farm program survived the transition and remained a vital part of the AFC's mission. The American Forest Foundation (AFF), a nonprofit organization chartered in 1981 with the purpose of encouraging sustainability, wildlife conservation, and environmental education, became a cosponsor of Project Learning Tree (PLT) a year later. It took over administration for PLT and the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) in 1993 when the AFC realigned with the American Paper Institute (API) to form the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA).

The 1990s were highlighted by the growth of the AFF's advocacy, policy, education, and outreach programs including Project Learning Tree, Shared Streams, and Forested Flyways. Under the leadership of AFF vice president Bob Simpson for the last decade, the American Tree Farm System has focused on supporting family-owned forests and establishing the ATFS certification program as an international standard. As of its 70th anniversary in 2011, the ATFS included 88,000 family forest owners practicing sustainable management of 26 million acres of forest land. By providing tools and on-the-ground support for family-owned tree farms, the ATFS is investing in alternative means for supplying the growing global demand for wood products.

Collection Overview

The collection includes historical material such as essays from the 1940s and 1950s attempting to define the burgeoning tree farm movement, inspection and certification records of some of the first tree farms, and early press clippings. The majority of the collection's documents cover the organization's activities from 1980 to 2005, and include publications such as Tree Farmer Magazine and Green America, records of various awards for outstanding forestry such as the Tree Farmer of the Year and Inspector of the Year awards, minutes and related materials from annual conventions and committees, records from educational initiatives such as Project Learning Tree, and materials from notable tree farm dedications. The collection also includes numerous photos and slides of ATFS events and activities, as well as films of educational programming and public service announcements by famous tree farmers such as actress Andie MacDowell, and actor Andy Griffith, musician Chuck Leavell, and President Jimmy Carter.

Collection Arrangement

During processing of the collection, paper materials in a deteriorating condition were removed from the collection and replaced with preservation photocopies. Several publications and promotional materials from third parties were also withdrawn. Wherever files were supplied with labels we attempted to preserve them unaltered except where they were clearly incorrect. The collection included two 3-dimensional objects which have been removed. Both items are described under Miscellany at the end of Series 4.

    Domino's Tree Farm Louisville Slugger bat

    • On March 19, 1988 a dedication ceremony was held for the Domino's Tree Farm on Drummond Island, east of the Mackinac Bridge in Upper Michigan. The then owner of Domino's Pizza and the Detroit Tigers, Tom Monaghan, arranged for commemorative bats to be made and presented to the dedication's attendees. The bat was donated to the American Forest Foundation on May 21, 2009.

    Florida State Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Division of Forestry Tree House

    • In the late 1980s, the ATFS built wooden boxes in the shape of miniature houses for every state and gave them to the state committees. They were designed to be used as educational tools for school children to highlight products that are made from trees. The box included jars containing wood chips, wood anethole, color molds, pine oil, and ester gum.
