Inventory of the Public Land Law Review Commission Records, 1966 – 1970

Descriptive Summary

Abstract: Meeting between 1965 and 1969, the Public Land Law Review Commission was established to review federal public land laws and regulations and recommend a public land policy.

The collection includes materials related to the numerous issues shaping public land laws that were researched by the Public Land Law Review Commission between 1965 and 1969. Materials include reports commissioned by the PLLRC; looseleaf notebooks that contain correspondence, notes, memos, reports, minutes of meetings, and other general business paraphernalia issued to every member of the Commission; drafts of the commission's final report; and notes taken by commission member Perry R. Hagenstein at the final meetings of the commission during the winter months of 1970.

Historical Note

Meeting between 1965 and 1969, the Public Land Law Review Commission (PLLRC) was established to review federal public land laws and regulations and recommend a public land policy.

 

Collection Overview

The collection consists of materials pertaining to the numerous issues shaping public land laws that were researched by the Public Land Law Review Commission between 1965 and 1969. Cartons one through five contain reports commissioned by the PLLRC. Cartons six through nine contain numerous looseleaf notebooks in which are filed the correspondence, notes, memos, reports, minutes of meetings, and other general business paraphernalia issued to every member of the Commission. Carton ten contains seven looseleaf notebooks in which are filed drafts of the commission's final report and notes taken by commission member Perry R. Hagenstein at the final meetings of the commission during the winter months of 1970. The final version of the report of the Public Land Law Review Commission, entitled One Third of the Nation's Land, was presented to Congress and the President of the United States later in 1970.

The information in the notebooks was sent to all members of the commission prior to its final slate of meetings throughout the winter of 1970.

Acquisitions Information

Received from Boyd Rasmussen, and from Perry R. Hagenstein in February 1991 and April 1992.

The PLLRC reports filed in cartons numbered one through five were given to the Forest History Society by Boyd Rasmussen (date of gift is unknown). The notebooks residing in cartons numbered six through nine were donated to the Forest History Society by Perry R. Hagenstein in February of 1991. In April of 1992 Mr. Hagenstein forwarded to the Forest History Society the seven notebooks housed in the tenth carton that contain drafts of the final report and his notations.
