Inventory of the Philip J. Janik Papers, 1959 – 2006

Descriptive Summary

Abstract: Philip J. Janik (1945-2006) was a forester who worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1974 through 2004, serving an influential role as regional forester in Alaska during the 1990s. His landmark achievement as Alaska Regional Forester was the completion of the revision of the Tongass Land Management Plan in 1997.

The collection contains e-mail correspondence, letters, handwritten notes, speeches, slides, meeting and conference materials, small USDA Forest Service publications, newspaper clippings, articles, and photographs collected throughout the course of Janik's career in the Forest Service, spanning from 1974 to 2004. The bulk of the collection centers on two major topical areas. The first is Alaska and the Tongass National Forest, where Janik spent time as the regional forester from 1994-1998. Most notably this portion of the collection documents the Tongass Land Management Plan revision completed in 1997, and the controversy surrounding this issue. The second major area of the collection is sustainable forestry, in which Janik played a leadership role late in his career.

Biographical Note

Philip J.

Janik was born in Wisconsin in 1945. He earned his bachelor's degree in forestry from the University of Montana in 1967. He also received a master's degree in wildlife science from Oregon State University. Janik began his career in forestry after serving for seven years as a naval officer and professor of Naval ROTC at Oregon State University.

Upon joining the USDA Forest Service in 1974, he worked as a Forest Biologist on the Siuslaw National Forest in Oregon, where he assisted with the design of timber sale projects and collaborated with the Siuslaw Forest Supervisor to integrate wildlife and fish issues into overall management of the forest.

As his Forest Service career progressed, Janik moved through a series of increasingly responsible positions. The 1980s saw Janik working in Washington, D.C., setting national policy on wildlife, fisheries, and rare plants. In 1994 he became the regional forester of Alaska. In this leadership role, Janik was the principal decision maker for all aspects of forestry on the Tongass and Chugach National Forests. His most notable achievement as Alaska Regional Forester was the completion of the revision of the Tongass Land Management Plan in 1997. He involved scientists throughout the revision process, pioneering a science-based forest management strategy focusing on conservation of this unique, old-growth rainforest.

Before retiring from the Forest Service in 2004, Janik also served as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief for State and Private Forestry. Near the end of his thirty-year career with the Forest Service, he embarked upon several projects which he continued to work on after retiring in 2004. In the early 2000s, not only was Janik a member of the Chief's Sustainability Roundtable, but he also served on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) External Review Panel, of which he was elected Chair in 2005. He also served on the board of the Institute for Culture and Ecology (IFCAE) during the early 2000s. As a member of the Old Smokeys, Janik devoted a great deal of time and energy to planning the Forest Service Centennial Reunion in 2005.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Monthly in June 2006 commemorates Janik's "cheerful energetic, and positive attitude that engaged every person around him and valued ideas from any source. His dedication to forest conservation and sustainable forestry was both obvious and infectious, and his constant search for better and more effective ways to promote good forest management was an inspiration to all who worked with him." Janik passed away April 28, 2006.
