Inventory of the John H. Hauberg, Sr. Photograph Album, 1920s – 1941

Descriptive Summary

Abstract: John Henry Hauberg, Sr. (1869-1955) was a lawyer, lumber and forest products executive, civic leader, historian, and photographer based in Rock Island County, Illinois. During his life Hauberg took more than 4,000 glass negatives, 3,000 lantern slides, 60,000 film negatives, and 1,000 35mm slides. Hauberg also authored nearly 150 unpublished volumes of Rock Island County and Illinois history.

The collection includes a bound photograph album entitled "Trees: 1941," compiled by John Henry Hauberg, Sr. and Susanne Denkmann Hauberg for their family for Christmas 1941. The album contains 105 black and white photographs from 1920s-1941 of unique trees located predominantly in the Midwestern United States. The photos were selected by John and Susanne as a tribute to their love of trees, with each image accompanied by one paragraph of explanation as to the significance of each photograph. Signed by hand, the hardbound album in this collection was prepared for their grown daughter, Mrs. Catherine Hauberg Sweeney, her husband, Edward C. Sweeney (a former president of the Explorers Club), and their granddaughter, Susanne.

Biographical Note

John Henry Hauberg, Sr. was born November 22, 1869, on a farm near Hillsdale, in Rock Island County, Illinois. Hauberg earned a law degree from the University of Michigan in 1900, passed the Illinois State bar exam in 1901 and set up a practice in Moline, Illinois. He married Susanne Christine Denkmann on June 29, 1911. John and Susanne had two children, Catherine Denkmann Hauberg and John Henry Hauberg, Jr.

Hauberg purchased his first camera from a Montgomery Ward catalog in February 1889. With a passion for nature and history, he began taking pictures of his home and the countryside around him. By the end of his life, Hauberg had taken more than 4,000 glass negatives, 3,000 lantern slides, 60,000 film negatives, and 1,000 35mm slides. Hauberg also authored nearly one hundred fifty unpublished volumes of Rock Island County and Illinois history, typed and combined with photographs in binders. John H. Hauberg, Sr. died on September 13, 1955.
