Biographical Note

Professional forester and Sierra Club consultant Gordon Robinson was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1911. In 1939, two years after graduating with a degree in forestry from the University of California at Berkeley, Robinson went to work for the Southern Pacific Land Company as their first professional forester. Robinson worked tirelessly to reform the forest management policies of the railroad company, instituting a sustained yield timber management plan and emphasizing the need for conservation.

In 1966 he left Southern Pacific and was hired as staff forester for the Sierra Club. Robinson worked on the Redwood National Park project for the club, assessing the impact that the national park would have on the timber industry and employment in the region, and also represented the Sierra Club before various congressional committees regarding proposed forestry legislation. Throughout his various projects for the Sierra Club, in his articles for the Sierra Club Bulletin, and in his pieces for other forestry publications, Robinson promoted responsible forestry management and conservation. After retiring from the club in 1979 Robinson continued to lecture and publish on the subject of excellent forestry, finally publishing a book on the subject in 1988 titled The Forest and the Trees.
